These are colors used for a tad of emphasis. You can bring zing into any dull color scheme with accent colors. When choosing a color scheme, there should always be a dominant color. But a whole room in a single such color will look bland and unimpressive. So add a secondary color and then an accent color to bring some life into the whole room. The rule of thumb when applying accents are, 60% of the dominant color, 30% of the secondary color and 10% of the accent color.
Now, how do you introduce accent colors? Through the decor! For instance, in a living room, use the cushions, rugs, flowers or plant in a vase, pictures or photographs or frames, china, lamp shades or table covers to carry the accent color. In the kitchen, you could try pots and pans of a certain color, or tea towels and aprons of another color for the accent. In the bathroom, it could be the towels and bathmats or the toiletry basket. In the bed room, make sure you do not use the bed as an accent piece, instead it must be an integral part of the main color scheme. The cushions and throws however can be grouped with the accents.
