African violets fall under the category of ornamental plants because of how attractive they are. They are typically considered an indoor plant but can also be grown outdoors. Their vibrant colors are pleasing to the eye. They are native to the moist climate of eastern African dry forests. This plant was first discovered by Baron Walter von St. Paul-Illaire and he brought this plant to Europe. The scientific name of this plant is saintpaulia ionantha.
Looking into the specialties of African violets, dark colored thick big leaves are one of the unique features of these plants. Vibrant violet flowers growing on top of the leaves and a short stem make the plant unique and attractive amid other plants. Hybrid varieties of the African violet come in pink, red, purple and white colors. Two layers of petals are found in new hybrid varieties of the African violets. Besides this, there are more varieties with different pleats of petals with colored corners. The plant flowers for an entire year expect in Kerala were it flowers only between the months of March and June. .Even without the flowers the leaves by itself are quiet fascinating to look at.
