Known also as munidruma, agati plant has the botanical name Sesbania grandiflora. It belongs to the paplionaceae family. Agati plant is the native of Malaysia and is found in India also. Agati plant is not only a medicinal plant, but also a highly nutritious vegetable with high content of vitamins. Since Agati plant is a leguminous plant, it absorbs oxygen from the air and makes soil fertile.This plant is found in 2 types, the ones with red flowers which is used as medicine and the ones with white flowers which is used as vegetable. The leaves of Agati plant with red flowers are bitter to taste..This plant is an excellent medicine to control biliousness and phlegm and since it contains vitamin A it is used in treating eye disorders. Agati plant contains Tannin and a certain type of gum and a lot of bio chemicals. The seeds of This plant contain vitamin C, while the leaf contains vitamin A and also calcium, proteins, iron, phosphorous etc. The flowers are rich in Vitamin B & C and all these makes Agati a rich dish. Diabetic patients are advised to eat less carbohydrate foods like rice and include items like agati in their diet, which provides enough proteins also. According to ancient Ayurveda, the treatment for diseases in the head is “Nasya”. The juice extracted from the agati plant leaves, filtered with cloth, are used for “Nasya”. But this should be done only with medical supervision. This is a remedy for headache as well as bleeding from nose. The flowers are ground and mixed with milk and consumed to cure disorders relating to genital organs.
