Aloe vera or Aloe belongs to the lilliaceae family. This plant is widely known by its scientific name called Aloe vera. It is very essential to grow Aloe vera in the compound of every ones home. Aloe is a good cure for many diseases that affect ladies. Ayurvedic doctors grow Aloe vera for medicinal purposes. Aloe grows well in the humid and hot conditions prevailing in Kerala. This plant has fleshy leaves. An Aloe vera plant grows up to one and half meters tall and have around 20 leaves. The leaves of aloe grow up to 60 cm long and 7 cm wide. There are thorns in the sides of the leaves. The medicinal part of aloe vera is the sticky pulp seen inside the second layer of the stem. The pulp contains a chemical called aloin, which is used as medicine. Legend says, it was Emperor Alexander, who discovered the medicinal value of Aloe vera plant in Africa. In English, Aloe is a so called as miracle plant.
Today Aloe is cultivated commercially in a large scale. It is an essential ingredient in all cosmetics. For making skin and face creams, skin lotions, sunscreen lotions etc. aloe is used. The commercial cultivation of Aloe is not popular in Kerala. Aloe vera is a good cure for rheumatic complaints, biliousness, and diseases affecting kidney, liver, respiratory system, and also diabetes. Aloe vera is an important part of medicines prepared for diseases affecting women. The juice of this plant is dried and used in preparing ayurvedc preparations like ‘kumaryasava’ ‘chenninayakam’, ‘chandanadithailam’ etc. Barbaloin, aloe-emodin, are elements that exist in the pulp of aloe plant. This helps in good blood circulation in the uterus and other areas, and also in purifying the blood by expelling toxins.
Even after having such medical properties, aloe can be harmful to some people going through certain stages of some diseases. Pregnant women should not use aloe. Also it is not good for piles. Also for women who have a menstrual cycle of 28 days, it may develop adverse results if consumed. Aloe is a plant that can be easily grown in a house hold.
