Asparagus is a medicinal herb since vedic times. Asparagus is a plant that has a 100 roots. Asparagus belongs to the Liliaceae family and is botanically known as Asparagus officinalis. It grows up to a height of two and half meters and is a thorny plant. It is a plant with peculiar features. Once the plants produce the seeds, the branches start drying off. Again the plant grows with strength and produces tubers with high medicinal value. It can be cultivated in homes and apart from the tubers, leaves also have medicinal value.
The tubers of the plant are good to cure jaundice. The tubers are boiled in milk and consumed to cure jaundice. Also the tubers are used as medicine to cure urinary tract disorders and diabetes. Also the tubers are mixed with milk to make a decoction (kashayam) and given to pregnant women. This decoction helps in easy delivery and also increases breast milk. The tubers of the plant are also used in medicines to improve sexuality and to cure biliousness and rheumatism. The juice of asparagus tuber mixed with equal amount of water can cure stomach ailments. In total, asparagus tubers have high medicinal value.
It grows well in sandy soil rich in organic content. Propagation of asparagus is done mainly through tubers even though the seeds can also be used in some cases. Healthy tubers of the plants are collected before monsoon season. These tubers are dipped in 1% Bordeaux mixture for at least 10 minutes before planting. Pits are made 30 cm deep, filled with mixture of top soil and cow dung and and heaped at the top end, where at least 2 tubers can be planted simultaneously. Harvesting can be done from the second year itself. Watering and the weeding should be done as per need and watering is done at least 2 weeks prior to harvest. At least 15 tonnes of the plant can be got from one hectare of cultivation and since it has high demand in the market, this can fetch a good income to the farmer.
