Atithi Devo Bhava (‘Guest is God’)! Indian culture gives guests a respectful and almost godly stature. In the times of kings, a guest, even an enemy was not supposed to be harmed under any circumstance. This is why messengers from the enemy side were treated as guests.
A guest is someone who comes to your house without considering the day, date or time. Somebody who stays at someone’s residence for more than a day are not treated as guests. People form the same village are not considered guests either. A guest should be treated with respect and care. He/she should leave happy. A prime example of how to welcome and treat guests can be observed from the story of Kuchela who goes to God Sree Krishna. If a guest returns sad or unhappy, this will bring bad luck to the host. This ancient custom has helped India foster healthy ties with other countries. This atithi pooja has helped raise the repute of age-old Indian traditions.
