Castor oil plant is full of medicinal value, and is an important ingredient in the manufacture of ayurvedic medicines. Castor oil is an excellent pest controller. The oil cake we get after extracting the oil can be used as manure due to its high nitrogen content. The cultivation of castor is dependent on rain, but a place with water logging is not suitable for castor farming.
The castor plant has protein content and the castor oil is slimy in nature. The seed of castor plant has glycoprotein, which is poisonous along with the oil. For this reason we should not consume the fruit of castor plant. While extracting the oil from the seeds, the poisonous substance is also drained off and thus castor oil is used for medical purposes. In a well grown castor seed, it is found to have acetic acid and hydroxystearic acid in large amounts. The damaged seeds must be separated and dried properly before storing in sacks.
Castor oil used as a purgative. The flower of castor plant is used as cure for inflammation of the glands, and vaginal pain. It is also a cure for rheumatism, muscular pain, accumulation of phlegm etc. People having piles are advised to take daily, 3 spoons of castor oil after food, during night. For many years, castor oil is used for deworming. The seeds, roots, leaves all have medicinal value. Castor plant can be cultivated in a large scale.
