There are four basic steps to get DIY paint job looking professional, and they are:
- Cleaning the room: Use soap, detergent (or chemicals if necessary), and loads of water to get those grease of the walls. Scrub with sponge and water to get the walls and ceilings squeaky clean, free of any dust, dirt or smear. Once this is done, wait for the walls to dry completely
- Start with the ceiling: The first place you should start painting is the ceiling. Begin by applying a 3 – 4 inch strip of paint along the perimeter of the ceiling. It is always better to start at the window end and paint across the width of the ceiling. Always remember to paint in parallel bands.
- Move on to the walls: Do not start until the ceiling is dry. Here again, start with a 3-4 inch line across the perimeter. Start at the top left corner and work in areas of one square meter. With rollers, just paint in random directions across this area until it is completely covered. Once this is dry, paint in parallel bands over this coat.
- Finish the doors and windows: Once this is done, paint all the primed doors and window frames. You can do both the undercoat and topcoat.
