Drumstick or Moringa oleifera is a medicinal plant more than a vegetable. No other plant has vitamin content in it like drumstick. In 100 gm of drumstick (moringa oleifera) leaves, there are 11300 units of vitamins. Apart from this, the leaves, flowers, and fruits are tasty vegetables too. Moringa oleifera needs no care at all and yet gives excellent products too, which is a rarity in vegetables. Making it a part of our diet, helps in better eyesight and prevents from eye diseases. The roots and skin of moringa oleifera is also used as medicine for many diseases. The juice from its leaves is an excellent medicine for hypertension. One teaspoon of drumstick (moringa oleifera) leaf juice helps to keep the hypertension at a normal level for many hours together. Moringa oleifera is a tropical crop and it likes dry climate. It can be grown in any type of soil.
Drumstick or moringa oleifera is reproduced by planting its branches. The branches should be cut from the tree that gives lot of yield. Such branches are first planted in polythene covers and later replanted, after the root sets. It should be planted at a distance of 4 meters from each other, since it requires a lot of space to grow. It is ideally planted in areas with good sunlight to get more yield. For a highly yielding drumstick (moringa oleifera) tree, we should add 50 kg. of compost or cow dung as manure. Also covering the base with dry leaves and stirring the soil are ways to nurture drumstick (moringa oleifera). After the yield is over, the excess branches should be cut and the tree should be pruned for better strength and also avoid falling of branches due to weight.
