Horse gram is an effective ayurvedic medicine against diseases of the urinary system. Horse gram contains medicinally valuable substances like albuminoids, proteins and an enzyme called urease. It is an effective medicine for kidney stones. The stock that we get while cooking horse gram is taken accordingly for treating kidney stones. Also the cooked horse gram has to be included in the diet of people having kidney stones. Since it takes months to dissolve the stones, it should also be consumed for a longer period of time. It has the botanical name Macrotyloma uniflorum and it belongs to the family Fabaceae. It is good for the purification of blood. It is roasted and mixed with jaggery and made into balls and used as per need for purifying the circulatory system. While cultivating horse gram, the place should not have any water logging since the plant needs only little moisture present in the soil. Sunlight is an essential factor for the growth of horse gram and it can be grown in all types of soil. The seeds are used for propagation. For sowing its seeds the land has to be ploughed 20 cm deepand dried cow dung and bone meal should be added to the soil. The seeds are sown either by scattering them in the land or by sowing deep in the soil. The saplings are to be placed 20 cm equidistant from each other and weeds should be removed accordingly. Irrigation is necessary during very hot climate and when fruits are matured, the whole plant is plucked out and tied in to a bundle. The seeds are separated when the fruits dry off.
