Kaempferia rotunda or Indian crocus is a perennial herb, which can be harvested as fast as 7 months. It is cultivated as the same way as finger and the rhizomes have medicinal value. Indian crocus belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. Kaempferia rotunda or Indian crocus is an important ingredient in the making of ayurvedic preparation Chyavanaprasam, asokarishtam and kalyanakritham. Also it is used to heal wounds, cure stomach ailments and for post-delivery care. Kaempferia rotunda or Indian crocus is cultivated during monsoon season and can be easily grown in households too. Since this plant likes shade to grow this can be cultivated as an inter-crop. The rhizomes are used for propagation.
The ground used for growing Kaempferia rotunda or Indian crocus is ploughed nicely and sloped 15 cm from the ground. The rhizomes used for planting should be at least 15 gm in weight. These rhizomes are covered in sack and smoked by which the the sprouts come within 4 days. These sprouted rhizomes are planted at a distance of 20 cm from each other and the top is filled with powdered cow dung. Cow dung should be mixed with soil while ploughing also. Watering and mulching should be done as required. If the rain and cold climate is high, there are chances of rotting in plants, which can be prevented by applying 1% Bordeaux mixture. Kaempferia rotunda or Indian crocus is ready for harvest in 7 months. Once the leaves dry off, the rhizomes are separated from the root. One hectare of cultivation gives up to 20 tonnes of harvest.
