It is widely believed that even the air that passes through the Neem tree has medicinal benefits. Such is the value of Neem tree which is widely found in the Indian subcontinent and other south Asian countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar etc. Neem tree belongs to the Meliaceae family and has the botanical name Azadirachta indica A. Juss. The bark, fruits and leaf of neem are medicinally useful. By extracting neem, we get oil and oil cake. The neem oil cake is not only a good fertilizer, but also an insecticide too.
To get relief from worm infestation in the intestine, juice of neem leaves mixed with salt is consumed. In the treatment of jaundice, patients are given neem juice mixed with honey. Neem and turmeric is used by patients with chicken pox, while taking bath, to destroy germs. For mouth ulcers, neem paste is mixed with milk and consumed. The bark of neem tree contains the alkaloid margosin in large quantities and also chemical constituents like nimbin, nimbosterol, nimbidine etc. The bark of neem tree has antibacterial properties. The decoction made from the neem leaves and bark is used to clean any type of wounds. Also the decoction (kashayam ) made from the bark of neem is given to people affected with skin diseases. To cure disease like dysentery, neem bark is mixed along with black pepper, bark of rose apple tree and powdered to make a choornam and mixed with a teaspoonful of hot water and consumed. For treating fever and lack of appetite , decoction (kashayam) made from neem bark, clove and cinnamon are given. Neem tree has to be an integral part of every household.
