Before any auspicious event we should carefully consider both the good and bad omens. Good omens before an event prophecy a good ending while bad omens portent troubles. If during the Shilanyaayam (Cornerstone laying), bad omens are seen it is believed the construction will face numerous delays and problems. If on the other hand good omens are seen, the construction will progress smoothly. Many objects and events are considered good omens. Sugarcane, Poorna kumbam, lamp, lotus, a virgin, bells, fruits and married woman are all good omens. Pleasant news, flute, conch, Mridhangam, a single cow or buffalo, a calf with its mother, a pundit, Vedas, chanting of hymns, visually and aurally pleasing things, alcohol, fresh meat, clean laundry, fragrant objects, gems, famous personalities, religious processions, decorative flags, dresses and jewellery, dead bodies, a burning flame, people in governing positions are all considered good. Loved ones bringing us beautiful objects or gold, construction materials, pictures or portraits, and telling us good news beforehand are also good signs. Omens have been seen and interpreted since time immemorial.
Let us now see what the bad omens are. When we are getting ready for an event, if somebody causes a delay, if an object falls and breaks, if a branch falls down, a dress, an umbrella or a footwear tears, it is considered unlucky. If somebody sits on or sleeps on small fire, sesame seeds, knotgrass or dharba (all used for death rituals), it is considered to portent bad things. In the times of kings, there were rules to imprison or execute such people. If anybody brings firewood or an empty vessel, handicapped people, sick or diseased people, saints, quarrels, beggars, equipments of torture, medicines, dark pulses, salt, iron, puss, curd, faeces and cotton are also not good omens. Half-wits, mutes, deaf people, the blind, animals or birds fighting with each other, the hoof sounds of cows, the sounds of cats and dogs, snakes, owls, iguanas are all considered bad omens. Also if you find skeletons, charcoal or ash under the earth, these are also not considered good signs. Also lizards making sounds from the left, yawning, beating someone, pulling someone by the hair, an object falling down and breaking are all bad omens.
