The medicinal plant Orila (Desmodium gangeticum) can be distinguished by its creeper like nature. The stems of orila are ash colored and the leaves are ovate or elliptical and are single. Thus the plant got the name Orila (Desmodium gangeticum). The roots of orila grow very fast and it is the roots that have medicinal value. Flowers are born in racemes and the fruits are flat and 4 cm long .Orila (Desmodium gangeticum) can be called as medicine belonging to the leguminous family. The roots have the presence of resil alkaloids. Orila is found in abundance in the forests of India. Belonging to the papilionaceae family,Orila has the botanical name Desmodium gangeticum. This is best used to treat heart ailments and is included in the medicinal group Dasamoolam. Also the roots of Orila have the presence of strong oil.
A decoction (kashayam) using the roots of Orila mixed with double the amount of water and cow’s milk is made and this can be given as medicine to patients with heart ailments. This decoction also helps to cure body pain. Also Orila is used as medicine for other diseases also.
Orila is a plant that can be grown in coconut groves as they need less sunlight. Orila can be grown in households or hedges also. Orila blooms in the month of February to April. When the fruits ripen and attain brown colour, they should be plucked. Wrap the Orilafruits in cloth and keep in direct sunlight for at least 6 days. Separate the seeds from the dried fruits. Make a mud platform up to 50 cm high and sow the seeds. For 1 sq. mt.add 4 kg of organic manure in the soil before sowing the seeds. The seeds are best sown in the month of June –July. At this time the soil should be kept moist always, once the plant is fully grown, and then there is no need of extra care. Once the plant is 10 months old, it can be up rooted and the roots can be used for medicine.
