Like any other animal, ornamental fishes too should be fed the proper food, on time. Over feeding will result in the aquarium becoming dirty. Since the fries are extremely tiny, they have to be fed food like powdered egg yolk. By mixing oil cake, cow dung, excreta of hen etc. and keeping for one week ,we can make a feed similar to Moina ( a type of live culture used to feed fries ) which is very ideal for these fishes. It helps in the faster growth of varieties like Gold fish, Angel fish etc.
Even though the food habits of different ornamental fishes differ, almost all of the meat-eaters like live food. Providing them live feed once a week improves health and life of the fishes. The quantity of artificial feed given is a very important parameter to be monitored, as an excess may contaminate the water and adversely affect the fish.
Ornamental fishes may be herbivorous, carnivorous or omnivorous. Fishes like the Kissing Gourami are herbivores by nature, but may consume meaty food if necessary. Guppies on the other hand are omnivores, but usually prefer algae. Bichirs are also omnivorous but they prefer snails, earthworms, mosquito larvae, crustaceans etc.
