Here’s a very short and easy description on the materials you’ll need for an effective paint impression.
Paint supplies: You need acrylic paints, glaze, varnish, stainer and white spirit. Acrylic paints, although water-based, will become waterproof once dry. Glazes are transparent films of colours, used exclusively for creating paint effects. In varnishes, purchase a polyurethane varnish which will provide good surface resilience. A stainer is a solvent-based dye. You need spirit to dissolve it, which is where you need the white spirit.
Material supplies: You need a flat fitch, a flogger, jamb duster, mottler, sponge and softening brush. While a flat fitch is a hog’s hair brush used to paint crevices and difficult areas, a flogger is a horse hair brush used to give paint a textured finish. A mottler too is a brush used for textured finishes, while softening brushes are used to blend glazes after they have been applied. A jamb duster is used to remove dust before painting a surface. A sponge, apart from cleaning surfaces, can be used to create sponged paint effect.
