The very name Pearl spot (karimeen) tickles our taste buds, since this fish is a favourite food worldwide. Pearl spot are found mainly in backwaters and water bodies filled with mangroves. It does not catch diseases due to to its high immunity. So it is a commercial fish that can be easily cultivated. Once we start farming, we do not need to replace the fries often as this fish breeds by laying eggs. Only thing is to take care of the fish nicely. The fries of pearl spots are not eaten by other fishes, due to its thick and sharp bones. They have good market value and it can be cultivated by making a pond. Pearl spot can be grown in fresh as well as saline water.
Pearl spot can be grown along with other fishes like milk fish, grey mullet red mullet etc. Its favourite food is decayed plants, organic waste, zooplanktons etc. The food should in required quantity should be dropped into the pond. Oil cakes, feed for fishes, waste of meat, artificial feed, etc. are foods. Also they can be fed with excreta of hen as it provides enough fatty acids to the pearl spot and speeds up their growth.
