Pomegranate has the botanical name Punica granatum, and belongs to the lythraceae family. This fruit has been mentioned as one among the 61 exquisite fruits in ancient ayurvedic books. It is cultivated from west Asia to India, the Mediterranean regions etc. The fruits, leaf, flowers, stem bark and bark of roots all have medicinal value. The pomegranate fruit dried and powdered, mixed with honey, is used to cure a type of bilious disease. The fruit can be mixed with jaggery and given to people who consume alcohol, to ward off the vomiting and drowsiness. It is an excellent medicine for treating ulcer in the stomach. The decoction prepared from the roots of pomegranate plant helps to destroy the tape worms from the stomach. The pomegranate fruit contains medically important chemicals like tannin and pectin, and also elements like fatty acids, amino acids, calcium, glucose, Vitamin C etc. The bark of the roots contain alkaloids.
