There are some issues that affect the prosperity of a house. These are people who know this to be true and there are sceptics as well. There are people who believe that some pets bring bad luck. Black cats and roosters that cannot crow fall under this category. Another concern that will affect the household is the evil-eye. But no scriptures on astrology mention such Doshas. Planting a bamboo, using garlic or placing a Garuda yantra in your house are believed to ward off the evil-eye. The pictures of deities in your house is also an effective protection. Since maintaining the proper purity and sanctity of an abode is not easy, it is not advised to place idols of deities inside the house. Also invoking the divine in a murti nearby a house will bring bad luck.
The area surrounding the house must be thoroughly cleaned before dusk everyday. Eating after serving our ancestors, gods, maids, servants and guests will bring prosperity to the household. Having a cow, sandal, Veena, mirror, ghee and honey inside the house will also bring good fortune. The main entrance of the house should not face the south side. To get dressed up in front of the mirror after nightfall is considered inauspicious. To feed crows or pets before a meal is also propitious. Stepping on scattered grains or pulses will bring misfortune. To store carcasses or body parts of animals inside the house is not wise. Exceptions to this include elephant tusks and peacock feathers.
Do not serve milk or curd to others after dusk. After sunset, be careful not to give anyone money. Do not place muram (a type of sieve) or brooms leaning against the wall. Also clean cobwebs regularly as this will bring bad luck. Do not gift or give anybody, gold, silver, copper, bronze or money on Tuesdays and Fridays. The middle or main region of the house should always be kept clean and tidy. Lightning strikes on the house or nearby trees is considered a sign of misfortune. Praying to the Sun god on Sundays is the only solution. Illnesses unexpectedly affecting household members or pets, dogs howling, cows beating their hoofs against the ground, somebody’s hair catching fire – are all considered bad omens. Paying special attention to the above mentioned factors and praying to God with all your heart is the only solution against these evils.
