Scientific name: Elaeocarpus ganitrus. Name in different languages: English: Utrasum bead tree, Blue Olive Berry. Hindi: rudraksha. Sanskrit: rudrākṣa, rudraksh. Malayalam: rudraksham.
Rudraksha is a highly revered tree found in the Himalayan ranges and other regions of Indian subcontinent. This tree grows up to 20 meters high and bear beautiful white flowers. The fruits of Rudraksha are worn as chains. They have the ability to control the blood circulation in the nervous system. Rudraksha tree is botanically called Elaeocarpus ganitrus. People have started cultivating rudraksha as a medicinal tree. It (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) is a good medicine for cardiac diseases and also to treat mental disorders. Rudraksh fruit is seen with many faces. Fruits up to 12 faces are seen in India. It’s fruit has great medicinal value. The fruits of Rudraksha is rubbed in rice water and applied on the blisters of chicken pox and small pox as a remedy. Since it is rich in alkaloids, it is a good medicine for rheumatism and biliousness. Also it is a good medicine for breathlessness and hypertension.
This tree likes to grow in cold regions. But they are also found in tropical regions and can be grown where there is good water availability and shade. But the growth pattern differs from the rudraksha trees (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) that grow in cold regions. The branches are used for propagation where thin stems are planted. For planting, pits are made three fourth of a meter deep, which is filled with compost and top soil. This is heaped 25 cm from the ground level and watered thoroughly and left as such for 8 days. Later the thin stems are planted accordingly. The stems should be planted soon after cutting from the tree. Organic manure should be added before monsoon and enough water should be given during summer.
