Usually staircases are built in houses to reach the upper portion of the house. This can be built either from inside or outside the house. Staircase should be built by following vastu shastra. Staircase should be built in a direction where people climb the stairs facing the south or west direction. Staircase should not be built facing from south to north or west to east directions. This may result in adverse effects or vastu doshas.
The stairs should end up in the top floor where one enters facing the east or else the stair should end facing the south where on enters facing the north eastern side. In houses that faces the south or north direction, if staircase is built in the space in the eastern side avoiding the north east corner, it can face the southern side and can be built adjoining the western wall. This enables to enter in to the western side itself. In the northern side joint stairs can be built in the north western corner avoiding the north east side. The above points are referred to staircases built outside the house.
