Thulasi or Tulsi (holy basil) is the favourite plant of all gods including Vishnu. It is the integral part of all poojas or offerings. While building the platform for this plant in the house, the rules of vastu shastra should be followed properly. The ideal location for making the platform for thulasithara is the eastern side of the house where we get sufficient sunlight.
The platform should be placed directly in front of the front door of the house and it should be higher than the foundation of the building. More than one plant should be planted and daily lamp has to be lighted and we should circle the platform in prayer (pradakshina). The platform (thulasithara) should be kept neat always. We should not put waste near the thulasi (Tulsi) or nor should we go near it in a dirty state. We should recite prayers while going near the plant and also never pluck thulasi (Tulsi– holy basil) other than for offerings. Never spit or urinate near the plant. Also we should not pluck thulasi (Tulsi-holy basil) during dusk or on Tuesdays and Fridays and on 11th day of the lunar cycle (Ekadasi). The thulasi platform (thulasithara) should be kept pure like the prayer room.
