Two types of aquatic plants are found in the submersed type, the one which has roots and floating ones. Non rooted plants are seen as a floating lot in water bodies where you get enough ‘Ceratophyllum’ and ‘Nitella’.
Rooted aquatic plants grow from the ground and are distinguished with their long, thin leaves. Eleocharis, Vallisneria etc are such plants. Plants like Cabomba, Hydrilla,Lima , Na jazu, Hydrophylla etc. are carpet type, which enhances the beauty of the aquarium. Common aquatic plants found today are the ones with spear like leaves surrounding an umbrella. Plants like Bliss ceraptorytes, Acorus, Seethamma, Echniodorus, If kept at the centre of an aquarium, catches wide attention with their beauty.
Care has to be given while selecting aquarium plants. Never use plants which show damage in their leaves or stem. The plants have to be cleaned thoroughly, as animals like snails may be found on them. These plants are to be immersed and kept in a mixture of lime and water in a ratio of 1:6. After this the plants are to be put in potassium permanganate solution for another 10 minutes and then washed before planting in the aquarium. Aquatic plants is very conducive for the healthy growth of ornamental fishes.
